Habitat

The breeding season lasts from approximately March to June and a female usually produces one litter of between 2-7 young per year after a four week gestation period. The young are born blind and bald and leave the nest just 5 weeks later. Commonly moles are most active during this period.

The Mole (Talpa Europaea) is abundant throughout the mainland Britain. It has a cylindrical body of between 12-16cm from tip of nose to tip of tail.

Males are larger than females. Their famous fur runs in both directions, so as to better enable travel in either direction of it’s tunnels. The eyes are very small and are hidden within the dense fur, but are capable of detecting light. There are no external ear flaps but the sense of hearing touch and smell are all very well developed.

Moles do not hibernate and are active all year. The presence of moles is instantly recognisable due to the spoil heaps or “Mole Hills” they produce when tunnelling.
